Volunteers Are Our Backbone

This week is National Volunteer Week and the theme is Te Hua o te Mahi Tahi—The benefit of working together.

RiverCare employs two staff (one full-time and one part-time). The rest of the people involved in its operation are volunteers: from the members on its executive committee (15 foundation members and two advisory members) along with the many volunteers who assist in the planting events in August/September of each year. These could include children from local schools, parents, teachers, employees from organisations or people wanting to do something good to help the environment. They do this work tirelessly and without pay to make a difference—so thank you!

We will be profiling some of our amazing RiverCare volunteers in a series called 'River Warriors—The Faces Behind the Mahi'. So, keep an eye out on our future posts.

According to Statistics New Zealand, in the year ended March 2018, volunteers collectively worked 159 million hours, with the value of this labour estimated at $4 billion. Wow!!!! These volunteers have made a significant contribution to the not-for-profit sector and Aotearoa.
